Lasallian Youth

De La Salle Youth was established in 1st October 1995 initiated by Brother Noel Saqer and Brother Rafael Konzales (Director of De La Salle College in Jerusalem at that time). Mr. Yousef Jahshan and Ms. Mary al-Basir took the initiative to proceed with the work and activities of the youth.
De La Salle Youth sign is: FAITH - BROTHERHOOD - SERVICE.

De La Salle Youth is a group of Palestinian Christian students that belong to the International Lassalian Youth located in Rome. The members of the youth in Jerusalem are always active in their society and church, responsible for assisting their Palestinian people abiding by the words of God to spread love, justice and peace among them.

The Youth of Jerusalem gives a good opportunity to students in sharing their experiences as Jerusalemites, Christians and Lassalians to understand and recognize their duties as Christians living in the Holy city of Jerusalem, the city of the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Youth's activities:

- Holds a weekly meeting every Saturday for its members.
- Holds a long studying day every three months which includes readings, studying in series, mass and joyful parties.
- Arranges for a seasonable picnic to historical and entertainment places.
- Abiding by its sign, Faith - Brotherhood - Service, the youth cares for the isolated and poor people by training its members on serving them. De La Salle Youth has arranged to visit orphan and elderly houses in feasts and holidays continuously by offering food, gifts, and making entertaining parties. For three consequent years De La Salle Youth runs two picnics for the old men and women in Abu Deis Elderly House, one to the beautiful city of Jafa and the other to Tiberia. The youth settles all the expenses of both picnics and this is one of its most important activities.

- De La Salle Youth participated in the General Conference of De La Salle Youth in the Middle East, which was held in Jordan in 1996, in Egypt in 1997 and in Beirut in 1999.

- The youth participated in the International day assembling with the Pope Paul John II, which was held in France in 1998.
- It participated in the international meeting of the Monotheistic Young (Jews, Christians and Moslems) which was held in Amman on September 1999.
- De La Salle Youth in Jerusalem has arranged for religious and historical 7 days-trip to the South and North of Palestine to seek in depth the holy sites of the Holy Land.

Sports Groups

Introduction:

De La Salle Club in Jerusalem was first established in 1964 .It was revived, or rather reestablished, in 1986 by a group of De La Salle High School graduates and others, to become one of the respected clubs in Palestine.
The club is registered officially with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the Palestinian National Authority.

Sport teams:

The Club has, during the past few years, succeeded in forming several sport teams for all ages and for both, male and female. All this was not possible without the grateful support from the Freres school administration. They allowed us the school grounds, provided the basketball court, big meeting hall, and two rooms adjacent to the court inside the school vicinity at the New Gate within the old city of Jerusalem to which all sports, social and cultural activities are undertaken. Besides, the club is self-financed and is not supported by anyone or any institution other than the nominal membership fees collected, some limited donations and from some dinner parties we offer yearly. In spite of all that, the persistence and the goodwill of the members led to the success of the De La Salle club.

The main goals of the club:

- To provide sport and social activities for the youths who are deprived from such activities.
- To protect youths from deviant acts.
- To create love and unity among young people.
- To make their gathering useful to the society and the country.
- To reach out to all young people who may feel left out or deprived.

Club's main activities:

The club's location is at the premises of De La Salle High School (Freres School) at the New Gate in Jerusalem inside the walls of the Old City. The club has access to one basketball court, one volleyball court, two offices, one changing room , one shower room, one large hall divided into weight lifting and fitness area ; Ping-Pong (table tennis) area; baby-foot game area and a store room. The school gratefully provides all the club's premises for the club's daily activities and use.

Other achievements:

Aside from basketball teams, the club is involved in several cultural activities, lectures and seminars about important subjects such as drug abuse and alcoholism.
The Club organizes yearly the summer camp program including boys and girls (age ranging from 4 - 12 years old). Several activities take place during the summer camp including sport, cultural, educational and entertainment. More than 350 children participate in the summer camp program organized for a whole month during the summer vacation.
The club also seeks to help the unemployed members to find jobs, or to secure scholarships for some members to study abroad. Many of the Club's members have done voluntary work with the local organizations especially in times of emergencies.

International involvement:

- Participating in International games and tournaments in many countries such as Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Russia, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal. Many more destinations are targeted in the future

- Hosting two Arab tournament held in Jerusalem with participation of teams from Arab countries specially from Jordan in the years 1998 and 1999.

This summer 2000
THE JUNIOR TEAM FOR AGE 17 YEARS OLD WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN AN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT WHICH WILL TAKE PALCE IN PARIS FOR THE PERIOD FROM 18-25 JULY 2000.
